Yoga Therapy for Diabetes -by Evan Soroka

If you know me, you know that I love yoga and everything that has to do with diabetes education… especially when it means living a healthier life while taking fewer pills! 😉

So when I saw the title of this book, I knew I had to get my hands on it ASAP. And though I had to endure more covid-related shipping delays 🙄 … let me tell you: it did NOT disappoint!

Yoga Therapy for Diabetes is written by Evan Soroka, a well-known yoga teacher in the Type 1 diabetes community. Even though Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes have certain differences, the issues addressed in this book easily apply to anyone with prediabetes or any other kind of diabetes. This is because:

  • the symptoms of low or high blood sugar (hypo- and hyper-glycemia) can be experienced similarly in both Type 1 and Type 2;
  • diabetes related stress has a huge impact on the quality of life and the ability to manage blood sugar levels for anyone living with diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2);
  • long-term complications such as neuropathy and the challenges of pain management are equally present in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

This isn’t just a “yoga helps with stress relief therefore yoga helps diabetes” kind of book. The author does an excellent job at explaining the physiology of diabetes to better help you understand what’s happening inside your own body and how a yoga practice can have a positive impact on your life. Physically, mentally and spiritually.

How can you deal with insulin resistance?
What can you do when you have a post-prandial spike?
How can you recover after a severe episode of hyperglycemia?
Or after a severe episode of hypoglycemia?
How can you improve your hypoglycemia awareness?

You will find many physical practises as well as many spiritual, meditation or breathing practises recommended to help you deal with all these different challenges.

SO MUCH valuable information. I get so excited when I talk about it! 😅

But in all seriousness, even if all you remember from this book is the importance of self-care as a complementary approach to your current treatment plan, you will already have made a massive positive impact on your health.

I truly wish the information in this book was more common knowledge in our current healthcare system.
