id you know that the most frequent advice that doctors give to people living with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes is to “go on a diet” and “lose weight”?
This isn’t an official statistic… this is simply what I hear most from patients who come to refill their prescriptions at the pharmacy.
I can’t help but wince every time I hear the words “diet” or “weight loss”. Why are people made to believe that these are the most important things for Type 2 diabetes management? I really don’t know… 🤷♀️
If you’re confused, PLEASE continue reading! There’s a really important message here.
Let me tell you why I believe that you should not focus on diet or weight loss:
- Diets are inherently temporary. Going on a diet always refers to changing the way we eat.. for a limited amount of time. But what happens after you are done dieting? Do you go back to your previous eating habits that led you to poor health in the first place?
- Weight loss is not necessarily a sign of good health. What’s the point of losing weight if you’re still eating plenty of sugar, and highly processed foods? Yup! It’s absolutely possible to lose weight while having blood sugar levels that are off the chart.
So what’s the solution? Well I’m glad you asked!
- Don’t diet. Work on improving your eating HABITS for long-term health and success.
- Don’t focus on weight loss, focus on blood sugar levels. Focus on eating foods that don’t make your blood sugar levels spike. If you eat foods that keep your blood sugar levels stable, then you will successfully lower your A1c and reduce your risk of diabetes complications… Isn’t that the goal anyway? And as a happy side effect, you will possibly also lose weight in a natural and healthy way.
So I stand by my opinion: your doctor should NOT be the one giving you nutrition advice. Even if it is well intended, oftentimes the advice is oversimplified to the potentially harmful “go on a diet” and “lose weight”.
This kind of advice does not educate you on the importance of blood sugar balance, and therefore does not empower you to take control of your blood sugar results. Not to mention that it totally disregards the physical, mental and emotional challenges that one faces when trying to “diet” or “lose weight”.
Don’t get me wrong, it is essential to have a doctor as part of your of diabetes care team. A medical doctor is highly trained, experienced and skilled at diagnosing and treating complex medical disorders.
However, they are not highly trained and experienced at helping you create healthy eating habits. Which is why it’s important to have a team of different healthcare professionals working together to help you defeat your diabetes.
This is the reason my team and I have created an online course. Our online course is not meant to replace your current medical care. It’s meant to be complementary… To fill the gaps in the information you were given so that you can make sustainable lifestyle habit change and defeat your #prediabetes or #Type2diabetes.
