In last week’s blog post, I shared a story about an interaction I had with a doctor while I was at work (for those of you who are new here: I’m a pharmacist). The doctor had made a mistake in one of his prescriptions and refused to change it when I called him to suggest a safer dose for the patient.

After writing that story last week, I began to reflect on the times I’ve made mistakes and someone else brings it to my attention… What’s my usual reaction?
Well, I’m the kind of person who feels ashamed, who tries to explain what happened, but who always ends up apologizing profusely! 😅
Is it hard to admit? Yes.
Does it bruise my ego? Yes.
Does it mean I’m a bad person? NO.
What about you? How do YOU react when you notice you’ve made a mistake?
It’s okay, we’re all human and we all make mistakes. It’s part of life. Which is why knowing how to react when it happens is key to being a kind human! 😉
Now what about when the “mistake” made impacts no one else but yourself… how do you react then? For example, when you order in fast food, or when you don’t go on a walk or don’t workout like you had planned, or when you waste time scrolling on social media instead of going to bed early…
How do you deal with those “mistakes”? Do you get really angry at yourself or do you apologize to yourself?
This may sound odd, but it’s important to talk to ourselves from a place of self-love and self-compassion. When things get tough, replace your brain’s automatic thoughts of “you’re so stupid, you failed again” with “you will do better next time”.
I know it’s not always easy… but ultimately, every mistake we make is an opportunity for us to be more attentive the next time. Don’t you agree?
